Short Sea Shipping for Hugo Neu
CHAMPIONS OF RECYCLING
Cheng Solutions investigated coastal shipping and barging opportunities for national recycler Hugo Neu. The project entailed an examination of commodity flow surveys and rail cargo data, interviews with shippers and receivers of bulk commodities, nationwide barge operators, longshore labor leaders, 3PL businesses and port authorities, and investigations of new and existing terminals for barge operations. We developed financial models of LO-LO and RO-RO operations to various coastal origins and destinations in comparison to modal competition. Additional advisory was provided on transportation and rail operations at the River Terminal Development complex, Hugo Neu’s 300-acre warehouse complex in South Kearny, New Jersey.
SIGNIFICANCE
With over six decades in the field, Hugo Neu is the largest recycled materials exporter from the United States, including a recent venture in New York City area electronics recycling.
